People do realize HBCUs exist, and were created because we were DENIED access to the higher institutions of learning? And while they let a token or two through, America wasn’t and never has been very happy face about PoC educating themselves at any level?

cosmopolitan-fascist:

Caps on foreign students, Caps on Asian students

The hurdles and struggles for Blacks, Latinos, and Natives to even make it through K-12, let alone to GET into college?

I’m not talking about scholarships either.

I’m talking about surviving the SYSTEM

Sure, we might finally make it out of high school

But you don’t know the experience of Blacks on a White college campus. Even if it’s not an Ivy League school.

We’re not talking about not meeting the academic standards stuff

We’re talking about

How much bullshit are you willing to deal with to get that paper?

Not everyone can do it.

Sometimes it’s easier to leave. Or stop trying.

All Black institutions exist and persist because even in 2012 there aren’t very many safe places for us.

The end.

It doesn’t mean we’ve made it at all.

Don’t point to that as some kind of “success” for Black people, like we’ve made it over you.

I mean damn, how fucking lucky are we all the HBCUs weren’t fucking razed to the ground, the students killed

You know, like they usually do/did every time Black folks tried to have something?

Any idea how long it even took White folks to accept and acknowledge Blacks could LEARN, let alone accept the degrees and teachings from HBCUs?

And how they make a face when you say, here where I live, I go to A&T or Bennett? Or that thing they do, “Oh.” if you say Spelman, Howard, or Morehouse.

Those ain’t real schools, they just Nigger Schools. Ain’t worth a White man’s degree, don’t matter if it’s “accredited”. Your shit still might get tossed.

And if they do let you in that school, all they can think is, “Ugh, how’d they get in?” “Wow, they made it out.”

Don’t tell me we’ve made it here cause we passed over a few damn hills, we still got mountains to climb.

“But you still live in America, you’re still an American -.”

Not to them.

Never have. Never will be.

Is this what the guy was talking about who was bitching that black people take his money to go to school or s/t? HBCUs? Bc people who aren’t in tune with the facts you just laid out are pitiful. HBCUs arent just separatist radical institutions created by resentful minorities; even if they were, so what? apparently white people are fucking idiots.

nah, the whiny guy was English. going to the university of liverpool or whatever.

All right, I have received permission to post these pictures.  Thanks to the person at Anime North who sent me these.

This was the booth in question.  As you can see they were selling ugly, poorly made HS bootleg items, plus lots of others (Adventure Time, etc).

Let me be really clear here: I don’t like it when people sell their fanart prints or handmade fan items, but I can understand.  This, however, is an act of pure scumbaggery.

This is apparently the “company” selling these items.  I urge everyone out there not to buy from them at any convention they may attend, and to ask others to do the same.  Don’t support thieves.

So okay so- I saw a couple of people yesterday walking around with these and when they saw that I was a Homestuck (being in Roxy cosplay and all) and they excitedly showed me their pillows, I sort of just smiled and nodded and asked where thy’d gotten them rather than confronting them about it.

But today I went the Dealer’s Room and found the booth selling them, and got down their name and contact info, which I texted to Colin to forward to Rachel (unable to send it directly; having no internet on my phone what with being in Canada and all).

I then went to the nearest staffer I could and asked who I should talk to to report plagiarism in the Dealer’s Room, and he sent me to another guy (who sent me to another guy, who sent me to another guy, who sent me to another guy- I swear, no one on the fucking Anime North staff knows who the fuck to talk to about anything), who finally got me to the head of the Dealer’s Room.  So I tell him that Cosplay-FTW is selling plagiarized material and he doesn’t even let me finish when he says he already knows that there’s an issue with them, and that other people have already reported them.  He then tells me that someone will talk to them tomorow.

What the fuck??

I realize that there may be outstanding factors which I am not entirely aware of, but this is kind of an issue!!!  I mean, plagiarism is kind of illegal?????

To contrast, someone it seems actually reported me for the two Homestuck prints which I have hanging up, and the Comic Market head came over and talked to me immediately- at which point I pointed out my sign which very clearly reads ‘Homestuck prints are not for sale’ and explained that I have the prints up because I’m proud of the art and want to display it, and occasionally I randomly give them out to cosplayers if I like their costumes.

And see, I honestly don’t mind the fact that the Comic MArket head came over to talk to me- in fact, it makes me happy to see the rules being enforced and an immediate response from the staff.  So why is it so impossible to do this in the Dealer’s Room??

Overall, I’ve quite enjoyed the attendees at Anime North- I’ve met a lot of really cool people and seen a lot of talented cosplayers, but… I’ve been having quite a bit of trouble with the staff.  I’ve been yelled at, misdirected, and just generally treated poorly.  Considering that I am a paying vendor, I sort of.. expect better than this.

Anyhow this somehow turned into a rant about Anime North in general but to sum up the con knows about Cosplay-FTW and their plagiarism and has elected to not take immediate action.

stay classy, anime cons

platonic-symbiosis:

softowl:

Numbers three and four in the first short list on the page I linked you to are most relevant here!  The substantiality of the images used is fairly low—they’re usually very small and highly edited—and their value as copyrighted works is not effected. Wikipedia has a more in-depth article.  Especially of note is the part about “transformative, not derivative.”  When Andrew uses an image, he edits it, usually very very heavily.  As well, look at the part labeled “Amount and substantiality.”  The only non-drawn resources that tend to get heavy play are images of the Earth and space, which are (as far as I know), drawn from NASA.  NASA specifically does not copyright their works, because they want their images to be as freely available as possible.

Ultimately, however, fair use tends to be something that’s decided in court.  It’s not as cut-and-dried as many fields of law.  That said, I think you would have a hard time finding a lawyer who would say that the images in HS are not fair use!  And don’t worry, we do have our own legal resources (Topatoco does too!), and we do talk to them.  :)

I guess my point is, it seems pretty clear to me, someone who has read up on the subject, that the images fall under fair use.  And until you do more reading about the subject, it seems hurtful and unkind to say cruel things about others based on your own misconceptions.

Thank you for taking the time to explain things to me in more detail. I genuinely appreciate that, and I understand why, legally, Hussie isn’t doing anything wrong.

Luckily for me, it’s also perfectly legal to continue to think he’s a gigantic douchebag, for this and various other reasons.

hi platonic-symbiosis, this is an incredibly rude post! you’ve been being pretty rude and tactless in the previous responses (to which rachel has responded with grace and aplomb, as usual) but this kind of takes the cake.

now, perhaps you weren’t aware of this, but softowl is literally andrew’s partner. you just called her partner a “gigantic douchebag” to her face in what was otherwise a rather civil conversation.

like, that’s incredibly tactless and incredibly rude and pretty damn insulting. like, do you get this?? do you get why this would be wrong? you can have your opinions on  him but you should show some tact and grace when speaking to his SO. that’s just common courtesy and civility

i’m thinking an apology from you is in order :)

I was born to an undocumented Mexican mother in San José, Califaztlán. When my mother was pregnant she crossed the U.S-Mexico border ‘sin papeles’, so that I could be born a U.S citizen. After about a year, we returned to Mexicali Baja California with the rest of our family.

When I was seven years old my mom left, or I should say, escaped my dad and a life of domestic violence. She took my one-year-old sister and me to live with my grandmother, mi Nana. Then she crossed over to the U.S. again, this time legally, to find work picking strawberries in Watsonville, CA. I really missed my mom then, but really enjoyed the new freedom. After doing my homework, I would spend the rest of the evening playing soccer in the streets and jumping on the hoods of abandoned cars lining the U.S.-Mexico border. You see, my grandmother’s house was just two blocks away from the line Gloria Anzaldúa called a “1,950 mile-long open wound.” My neighborhood friends envied me because I could cross to el otro lado to eat McDonalds and buy cheap clothes at the flea market. Sometimes my friends and I would sneak across the fence through one of its many holes. As soon as we saw the border patrol come by we would rush back across. I remember bragging to my friends that I wasn’t afraid of la pinche migra because I was a U.S. citizen. I did not know then that la migra sometimes can get trigger happy and shoot at children simply for throwing rocks.

Even though I flunked second grade, mi Nana used to say that I was the smartest child she knew. She would put her hands together and say “que inteligente es mi niño.” Her tone of voice and expression somehow convinced me that I was smart. So I started doing better in school. My uncles would joke about my good grades, and warn me that the Russians would come and kidnap me so I could help them compete with the US.

When I was thirteen years old my mother finally decided it to bring us with her to the U.S. so that we could get an education. At the time she hoped that I would finish high school and maybe get an office job with air conditioning. But I came to UC Berkeley instead. And like many first generation Chicano college student, I felt lost and uprooted on this campus.

I remember, as an undergraduate, entering Doe Library for the first time. And as I descended to the lower levels of the Gardner stacks, I pictured myself as the kid in Journey to the Center of the Earth, my face filled with fear and awe. Doe library became my favorite place on campus. It was quiet, like a cathedral. I remember wanting to show my mom how amazing this place was, and then realizing that my mother could not follow me inside those walls. The university library is not a cathedral but a vault. There are bones and blood inside those walls, histories of rebellion not meant for us to know.

And now, after four years of undergraduate education, and ten years of graduate work, I have a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. I also have a wife, two beautiful children, three chickens, and a vegetable garden. I have decided to become a scholar in the field of Ethnic Studies, in great part, because of the sense of empowerment and dignity I gained while taking undergraduate Ethnic Studies courses. This is what Ethnic Studies graduates learn. We gain the tools necessary to fight for the well being of our communities, and to push for the radical transformation our society so desperately needs.

And even though the library is still my cathedral and I have made the university my territory, I must remember to see beyond these local walls. See my brown and black brothers and sisters in the streets of Richmond, Oakland, Salinas, Mexico and all of Latin America. And as the fisherman casts his net over the waters, we must now cast our nets across these borderlands. Fish our youth out of the dangerous streets and into the university. So that they too can see beyond the local walls.

I will now like to ask all the children in the audience to stand up. Children, please place your left hand on your heart, and repeat after me. ‘I promise’ ‘that I will study,’ ‘that I will dream a better world,’ ‘and that I too’ ‘will one day’ ‘go to college and graduate.’

Thank you.

The Official Copywriter Post

413proof:

theveiledwarrior:

Hey everyone,

I’m currently looking for ways to make $300 in 3 weeks. I am a skilled and published (although it was small-scale) writer, whose past honors include membership in The Quill and Scroll Honor Society. I am an alumna of a small Southern university with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies - I cannot give my concentration here, as it would make me far too recognizable.

But yes! I am looking for work, as I’ve been unable to pay my phone bill and need my phone to continue my job hunt. I will be in the Richmond, VA area for 3 more weeks; past that date, I will be officially up the creek without a paddle. While I am currently looking for other ways to make the money I need, writing is my most marketable skill.

If you need a copywriter - or ghostwriter, please message me via Tumblr. If you need a copywriter, please give me the page length and the price-per-page. If you need a ghostwriter, please give me as many details as possible regarding page length, content requirements, citation format, etc. Those who need academic assistance will need to forward their writing prompts as given by the instructor/professor to my Gmail account, which is available upon request.

I am particularly skilled at speech-writing! If you need anything from a corporate speech to a wedding toast, please feel free to contact me with your requirements!

I need to have completed all assignments and made the $300 by 15 June, 2012. Please reblog and forward to all of your friends and followers!

Thanks,

A.
